Abstract :

Potato tuber moth (PTM), Phthorimaea operculella (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) is a worldwide pest causing serious damage on potato, Solanum tuberosum (Solanaceae). Two separate field experiments were performed to determine the influence of different factors on PTM capturing by pheromone traps. At the first, four factors were considered; potato cultivars (Agria, Marfona and Santea), trap shapes (Funnel and Delta), trap colors (white and green) and trap installation heights (40 and 80 cm above ground). Although the results showed that there was no significant difference among the tested cultivars, the trap shape had a significant effect on the number of PTM caught. Delta traps captured significantly more PTM than the Funnel traps. Results suggest that the reaction of PTM males towards different types of pheromone traps was influenced by the potato cultivar. The second experiment aimed to assess the effect of the irrigation system (sprinkler and flood) on the capture abundance of PTM. The experiment set up in eight adjacent fields of potato cultivar Agria, in which four fields were under furrow irrigation, and four others were under sprinkler irrigation. Results showed that traps installed in furrow-irrigated fields caught nearly three times more moths compared to traps installed in sprinkler-irrigated fields.
